Greeting Etiquette

Topic: Role-Play Etiquette: Greetings & Response Times

The Debate The conversation began with Aric questioning why players post a message and leave without waiting for a reply. He characterized these "drive-by" greetings as rude and suggested that waiting up to 10 minutes for a response is standard for the genre.

Differing Perspectives

  • Mal argued that context is key. While he usually waits, he noted that expecting someone to wait 10 minutes for a response to a simple "Tal" (greeting) is a "wild expectation."

  • Kati Evans compared passing greetings to waving at someone on the street—it makes the environment friendly, but stopping to wait 10 minutes for everyone would make it impossible to get anywhere. She suggested a quick one-line acknowledgment is better than silence while writing a long paragraph.

  • Robert Darkthorn expressed impatience, stating that if he waits 5 minutes without a reply, he gets bored and moves on. He views RP like a movie and prefers "digestible" post sizes.

  • Ruby supported Aric, emphasizing that quality posting takes time and that one-liners are difficult to respond to with depth.

Conclusion The debate de-escalated when Robert joked about Gorean cities going to war over trivial things (like a conversation or a slave girl). The chat ended with Kati asking Mal to tell a story about his past "irrational things."

============================================

[05:28] Aric (orionbound): question

[05:28] Aric (orionbound): why do people bother posting without waiting for anyone to reply

[05:28] Aric (orionbound): before they walk off

[05:31] Sabayna (tremlays): That depends on the situation. Are you referring to something specific?

[05:31] Aric (orionbound): yup lol

[05:31] Mal (pwnography): Usually if I do it it's because I'm about to go home and afk

[05:32] Tyan Cabot (tyancabot): He got a passing  " Tal"  and no response was needed

[05:32] Aric (orionbound): its rude 😒 lol

[05:32] Mal (pwnography): Oh yeah that's pretty common, particularly if you are around the gate

[05:33] Aric (orionbound): *makes new rules no drive-by tals allowed.*

[05:34] Mal (pwnography): People will just walk by without saying anything then

[05:34] Kati Evans: So we are to not even acknowledge you are they if we are on our way somewhere?

[05:35] Robert Darkthorn (roberthounds): WEll honestly if I'm waiting for5 minutes for a reply....I'm already bored with you and are moving on

[05:36] Ruby Tengdur Jester Blissfull (pearl.peppermint): somepeople take time to type

[05:36] Robert Darkthorn (roberthounds): Frankly your lucky if you get 5.   Para players are good for me but please keep it moving

[05:36] Aric (orionbound): if ya cant be bothered to wait 10m for a response you're in the wrong rp genre lol

[05:36] Mal (pwnography): 10m for a response to 'tal' is a wild expectation

[05:37] Mal (pwnography): Unless the conversation has taken a turn I am unaware of

[05:37] Ruby Tengdur Jester Blissfull (pearl.peppermint): unlike some oneliners it takes alot to rp in this genre

[05:38] Aric (orionbound): one liners are lucky I respond lol 😆

[05:38] Mal (pwnography): I am aware of this Ruby, it's still a wild expectation to expect somebody to wait for ten minutes for a reply to a simply greeting

[05:39] Mal (pwnography): I would personally make the assumption if they wanted a para response to their greeting more effort would be put forth

[05:39] Mal (pwnography): Context is key

[05:39] Kati Evans: I would prefer a quick "Tal" back so that I would know that more is coming.  Then wait the 5 - 10 minutes does not seem so long.

[05:39] Ruby Tengdur Jester Blissfull (pearl.peppermint): yeah but some dont like to one line and it take time one lines are hard to respond to

[05:40] Mal (pwnography): I'm with Kati on this one. And I understand what you're saying, and I almost always wait for people to reply unless I'm really busy, but you can't expect everybody to do that.

[05:41] Robert Darkthorn (roberthounds): I see RP as a movie.   In a movie some context needs to be given and since we can't do that visually (much) we have to describe it.   Which is fine as well, but all I am saying is just break up a super long post into more digustable sizes.

[05:41] Ruby Tengdur Jester Blissfull (pearl.peppermint): then dont expect rp from someone if you wanna just leave and dont get mad when people dont respond to you and walk off

[05:42] Mal (pwnography): Who stated they expect that, or are we arguing with ghosts here

[05:42] Mal (pwnography): I'm sure people who do driveby greetings don't expect para rp responses lol

[05:45] Kati Evans: I like it when you greet everyone when you walk by as it makes the place more friendly, like waving as you walk by on the street does.  But I would not want everyone to talk to me if I had to wait 10 minutes for each person.  How would I get anywhere doing that?

[05:45] Robert Darkthorn (roberthounds): Please, do not misunderstand me.   I'm only stating an opinion

[05:46] Mal (pwnography): We all are. It's fine Robert. It's a friendly conversation

[05:49] Robert Darkthorn (roberthounds): Ah this is Gor.  Cities have gone to war for less than a talk over RP

[05:50] Robert Darkthorn (roberthounds): Imagine going to war over a mere slave girl?  How dumb is that!  ((runs and hide now)

[05:51] Mal (pwnography): Hah. I've done my fair share of irrational things in the past.

[05:54] Kati Evans: Sounds like some story I want to hear, Mal.

[05:55] Kati Evans: I like story time.  grins
